Instead, what you are experiencing is a reflection of how your Window of Tolerance the range of stress you can comfortably manage has significantly narrowed. When this window shrinks, even everyday stresses can push your brain beyond its ability to stay calm and regulated.

In practical terms, this means that relatively small triggers can send you into Overdrive, also known as hyperarousal, where your nervous system is on high alert, or into Shutdown, or hypoarousal, where you might feel disconnected and numb. These reactions are not random; they are learned survival mechanisms designed to protect you from perceived threats, even if those threats are not life-threatening in the present moment.

When your window of tolerance is narrow, several key parts of your brain become affected. The amygdala, which is responsible for detecting danger and triggering emotional responses, fires off signals too quickly and intensely. Meanwhile, the prefrontal cortex, which normally helps you think clearly and regulate emotions, loses its steady control. The hippocampus, which helps you differentiate between past memories and the present moment, becomes less effective, causing confusion between old traumas and current experiences. At the same time, your autonomic nervous system remains on high alert, preparing your body for threat responses even during ordinary, safe situations.

The aim in healing is not to force yourself into a state of calm or to suppress your feelings. Instead, the goal is to gently widen your Window of Tolerance, increasing your capacity to manage stress without tipping into overwhelm or shutdown. This process involves gradually helping your body and brain relearn that the present moment is safe and different from past traumatic experiences.

By expanding your window, you allow yourself to experience rest, connection, and daily decision-making as safe and manageable once again. This expanded capacity fosters emotional resilience and helps you regain control over your nervous system responses, leading to improved well-being.
